On the show, these doctors -- who were on duty on September 11, 2001 -- reflect on their experiences from both medical and personal perspectives. Listeners will hear what it was like in the operating room when they got word of the disaster and started clearing out patients and prepping for what they thought would be the arrival thousands of victims to the logistics of emergency preparedness, and why they learned no one was prepared for a disaster of this magnitude. In addition, Glenn Asaeda, MD, Deputy Medical Director of the Fire Department of New York, a "first responder" on 9/11, joins the show to reflect on the communications and dispatch issues that day, as well as the trauma of seeing victims jump from the towers.
Doctor Radio Reports: "9/11 - Doctors Who Answered the Call" will air September 10 from 10:00 - 11:00 am ET on Doctor Radio, SIRIUS channel 114/XM channel 119.
Peltz's guests for this in-depth roundtable discussion:
-- H. Leon Pachter, MD: Chair, Department of Surgery, George David
Stewart Professor of Surgery, NYU Langone Medical Center and Bellevue
Hospital Center. Pachter was on duty at NYU Langone Medical Center and
Bellevue Hospital Center on 9/11 and was responsible for emergency
surgical preparations and surgical units at both hospitals.
-- Mark Adelman, MD: Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and
Endovascular Surgery, and Associate Professor of Surgery, NYU Langone
Medical Center. Adelman is a regular contributor to Doctor Radio. He
was a "second" responder on 9/11, working at the triage locations,
and--within 24 hours--moving to Ground Zero to surgically extract
rescuers that were trapped in the rubble during the tower collapse.
Adelman lives with the lung damage he thought was caused by smoke
inhalation but in reality was the pulverized remains of the World
Trade Center buildings.
-- Lewis R. Goldfrank, MD: Herbert W. Adams Professor and Chair,
Department of Emergency Medicine, NYU School of Medicine; Director,
Emergency Department, Bellevue Hospital Center and NYU Langone Medical
Center and Medical Director, New York City Poison Control Center. Dr.
Goldfrank is deeply involved with government on planning, strategy and
preparedness tactics for emergencies and mass casualties. He discusses
how 9/11 changed emergency preparedness procedures for the hospitals
and what we learned from 9/11 from a medical and response perspective.
-- Glenn Asaeda, MD: Deputy Medical Director, Fire Department of New
York. Asaeda was a first responder on 9/11 and tells the story of what
he and his men witnessed, and the shock of watching people jump from
the towers, the nightmares he still suffers as a result, and the
problems with the communications and dispatch systems that day.
