Clickspring Design's Sets for CNN Election Coverage Nominated for Emmy
Outstanding Achievement in Scenic Design for the The News & Documentary Emmy Awards
NEW YORK, July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Clickspring Design's work for CNN has been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in set design for the 2008 U.S. Presidential election coverage. The News & Documentary Emmy Awards recognize outstanding achievement in news and documentary programming, and will be presented September 21, 2009 at a ceremony at Lincoln Center, in New York City.
CNN's Election Center in New York became the broadcast epicenter for the historical 2008 Presidential elections. "The Most Trusted Name in News" received the highest-rated coverage in both network and cable sectors.
Using the banner headline CNN = Politics, a fundamental equation for all design and production related to the election season was immediately established. The primary objective was to succinctly communicate a perception of unassailable editorial expertise. The secondary objective was to establish a strongly branded alignment between multiple CNN events -- twelve debates held across the country, five primaries and ultimately, election night.
Clickspring's team, led by principal Erik Ulfers, achieved these objectives with the development of a consistent graphic identification that could be dimensionalized in a 3-D environment. The tumbling cubes from the CNN traveling stage-set for the Democratic and Republican presidential debates became iconic of CNN election coverage, and lent a consistent and strongly branded "look." The graphic application on each cube, depending on which face was turned to the front, was as editorial as any political pundit's commentary.
The fully immersive environment of compound breaking news imagery underscored CNN's global authority for communication of world events, and the Presidential election in particular. The newest media technology was maximized to place anchors and viewers into the geography of the story, as well as engage the viewer in dramatic new ways. Viewers of CNN's election coverage had the sense that CNN was a participant in an innovative and unprecedented chapter in the American presidential electoral process.
Ulfers shares credit with Clickspring's Executive Producer Lori Nadler, and designers Shweta Vora, Tarrant Smith, Tom Schwinn, and graphic designer Raeford Dwyer. The CNN team included Guy Pepper, David Bohrman, Jane Maxwell, and Sam Feist.
