Production Company Expects to Spend $60 Million in Commonwealth
HARRISBURG, Pa., July 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Hollywood is again bolstering Pennsylvania's economy, thanks to the state's film tax credit.
A James Brooks-directed film today will begin more than two months of shooting and production in Philadelphia and its suburbs. The new movie, which remains untitled, is expected to provide an immediate $60 million boost to the southeast Pennsylvania economy, providing 250 full- and 1,200 part-time jobs.
The Philadelphia Film Office helped to lure the production company and its all-star cast to the state.
"This movie is one more testament to the worthiness of Pennsylvania's film tax credit and the movie production industry it has helped to create here," said Department of Community and Economic Development acting Secretary George Cornelius. "James Brooks has directed many outstanding films, like 'Terms of Endearment' and 'As Good As It Gets,' and we hope Pennsylvania will help to catapult him to more honors with this movie."
The romantic comedy will star Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson and Jack Nicholson.
Pennsylvania's $75 million film tax credit program provides a 25-cent credit for every dollar of qualified expenditure. To receive the film tax credit, at least 60 percent of a production's budget must be spent in Pennsylvania.
Projects eligible for the film tax credit include production of a feature film, a television film, a television talk show or game show series, a television commercial, a television pilot or each episode of a television series intended as programming for a national audience. A project is eligible if at least 60 percent of the project's total production budget is used for qualified Pennsylvania production expenses.
In June, an independent study of Pennsylvania's film tax credit said the program paid for itself in the first year of its existence (2007-08) by generating $524.6 million in total statewide economic impact, $17.9 million in state and local taxes, and 4,000 new jobs. The total value of wages from those jobs was $146.4 million.
