-- The Money Raised Will Help Prevent Birth Defects in as Many as 5,500 Newborns --

MEXICO CITY, June 19 /PRNewswire/ -- This month marks the celebration of the 50th Movimiento Azteca awareness and fundraising campaign, which was dedicated to support the National Network to Prevent Birth Defects (RENAPRED for its initials in Spanish).

Thanks to donations from both Mexico and the United States, through Fundacion Azteca and Fundacion Azteca America, more than Ps. 17.3 million (US$1.3 million) was collected, which is estimated to help prevent birth defects in as many as 5,500 newborns in Mexico.

The results greatly surpass the initial goal of 3 million pesos in support of 1,000 newborns.

Movimiento Azteca is a campaign of social co-responsibility open to organizations and individuals to support social and ecological programs, promoted by Mexican entrepreneur Ricardo B. Salinas Pliego, chairman of Grupo Salinas. The campaign is operated by Fundacion Azteca Executive President Esteban Moctezuma Barragan

This month marks the 50th Movimiento, a program that has raised more than 904 million pesos to directly support more than 1 million people. Movimiento goes beyond the contemplation of problems, seeking solutions by partnering with non-profit organizations with proven results.

The prior 49 Movimientos have received donations from more than four million people. The campaigns include televised reports on TV Azteca and Azteca America that raise awareness of causes and encourage donations. Past Movimiento causes include: organ transplants, cochlear implants, burn victim treatment, infant cancer, reforestation, street children and cerebral palsy. More than 124 organizations have received donations through Movimiento Azteca.

Movimiento Azteca, through Fundacion Azteca and Fundacion Azteca America, will continue to strengthen these projects in support of the Grupo Salinas value of generosity and promote a culture to support the members of our community with the greatest need.
