WEGENER(R) Showcases Advanced Localization Tools for Radio Networks at NAB 2009
MicroCasting(TM) tailors national programming to local markets, ShowShifting(TM) provides flexible programming playback while conserving bandwidth
DULUTH, Ga., April 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Wegener Corporation (NASDAQ:WGNR), a leading provider of equipment for television, audio, and data distribution networks worldwide, today announced it will showcase MicroCasting(TM), an innovative programming model for national radio programmers, and ShowShifting(TM), a new feature of WEGENER's(R) file-based distribution solution for radio networks, at the 2009 NAB Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, April 18-23 at NAB Booth #SU7913.
With WEGENER's new MicroCasting programming solution, national radio programmers move one step closer to "station in a box" operations by providing affiliate stations with highly customized content tailored to their individual markets. The approach provides the ability to combine national programming with local content and local automation schedules without a localized automation system. The MicroCasting workflow is achieved through file-based broadcasting, advanced network control, satellite and terrestrial network connections, and automation-friendly receivers.
Using the WEGENER iPump 6420 audio media server, a single 1RU appliance installed at affiliate stations, in combination with the Compel(R) network control system at the network operation center, personnel no longer have to handle custom CDs, schedulers, content servers, and affiliate automation equipment. New custom network feeds allow affiliates to retain all normal network scheduling features, including local ad insertion, local liners, downstream equipment cueing, and RBDS data. The new workflow streamlines radio networks' ability to tailor the audio to the station's needs as well as the ability to integrate local talent with the network content-without the restriction of hard timing the local elements. MicroCasting is implemented as an optional software upgrade to iPump 6420 audio media servers.
"MicroCasting is the future of network radio programming," said Ned L. Mountain, President and COO of WEGENER. "Our file-based broadcasting solutions eliminate inefficient content distribution through the mail and minimize equipment requirements at individual stations. MicroCasting combines centralized automation and content with true local customization."
Also for radio networks, WEGENER showcases ShowShifting, which allows affiliates or the network operators to control when individual programs will play out of networked iPump(R) 6420 audio media servers. The extremely flexible feature allows playback of key programs at multiple times and on different days.
As a result of the file-based broadcasting distribution, ShowShifting reduces the need for networks to rebroadcast a particular show multiple times to accommodate affiliates that want to broadcast the show locally at a different (or additional) time slot. This creates significant satellite transmission bandwidth savings when compared with linear operations.
"With the multiple time zones in the United States, trying to serve a network of radio stations with one linear network feed is no longer practical," continued Mountain. "ShowShifting provides the flexibility needed by radio stations across the country to schedule programming when they can maximize ratings. At the same time, ShowShifting saves time and money at the network level, because it reduces the need to schedule and transmit the same program multiple times."
NOTE TO EDITORS:
The NAB Show is the world's largest electronic media show that covers the development, management, and delivery of content across all mediums. Beyond an extensive exhibit hall, it features numerous conferences and educational sessions on a variety of topics. WEGENER's Vice President System Architect, Gary Pelkey, will present "Microcasting - Applying Automation with Customization to Radio Station Affiliates" during the Radio Engineering Conference on April 20. WEGENER's Vice President of Marketing, Kamy Merithew, will be part of the "How the Global Video Content Cloud Will Transform Your Business" panel during the Content Distribution Forum on April 21.
