Merriam-Webster Announces 'Bailout' As 2008 Word Of The Year

Merriam-Webster has announced the year's top ten words and definitions as culled from its popular Web site Merriam-Webster OnLine. The 2008 Merriam- Webster's Words of the Year list is based on users' anonymous hits to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary and Online Thesaurus.

The word of the year that received the highest intensity of lookups over the shortest period of time is "bailout," defined in Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition as: "a rescue from financial distress."

Americans Less Tolerant of Christmas Decorations This Year

A study reveals that Americans are less tolerant of their neighbor's elaborate Christmas decorations this year compared to last year. H-C-D Research compared this year's results to an identical study it conducted during the 2007 holiday season.

Respondents were asked if their perceptions of Christmas decorations have changed in comparison to last year. 35 percent said that their perceptions had changed. Among those responders, 43 percent indicated that there should be less decorating this year. Their reasoning was attributed to reduced budgets and less money to spend on decorations. The next top reason for this group of responders was that elaborate decorations would be inappropriate in a time when our country faces serious national and international concerns, such as job-loss, the economy, or war.

This holiday season push will put the final touch on the 100 million dollar goal for the Red Cross Campaign for Disaster Relief. Already, the campaign has raised nearly 70 million dollars since its launch in September, and the Red Cross hopes to meet its target before the year ends.
