Studio City Neighborhood Council (SCNC) Delivers Strong Response to Proposed Metro Universal Building Project

Studio City Neighborhood Council (SCNC) Delivers Strong Response to Proposed Metro Universal Building Project

SCNC continues its quest against NBC Universal's enormous Construction Project

STUDIO CITY, Calif., Nov. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Studio City Neighborhood Council (SCNC) announced today that it has delivered its much anticipated response to the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) on the Metro Universal Project, which would be built in conjunction with the NBC Universal Vision Plan. The proposed Project, which includes a massive $800 million NBC studio and office development atop the Universal City Red Line subway station by development firm Thomas Properties Group LLC, has been met with opposition from local residents, many community organizations, the Studio City Neighborhood Council and the area's City Councilmember Tom Labonge.

The released report highlighted numerous areas of concern to the stakeholders of Studio City. Of particular concern is the introduction of at least 15,000 additional automobiles to the area, which is already over-crowded and heavily trafficked. Also unacceptable to the SCNC is the relocation of a bus terminal near South Weddington Park where Little League Baseball players would be subject to the influx of bus exhaust. The SCNC is also troubled by the Report's repeated use of the words "UNMITIGATABLE" and "UNAVOIDABLE" in instances where serious health, water, and traffic consequences would result, and in which one of the area's most historical sites, the Campo de Cahuenga, would literally be buried in shade from the new high-rise buildings.

Ben R. Neumann, President of the Studio City Neighborhood Council, reacts: "In times where people are being driven out of their homes for various reasons, and community infrastructures are being pushed to their limits, we need to remind developers and the City that smart and responsible development, where attention is being paid to all parties affected, is an absolute necessity."

As part of this comprehensive written response, the SCNC is asking the City Planning Department to require the proposed Project to be reduced in size in order to eliminate the unavoidable impacts revealed in the DEIR. Additionally, the SCNC requests that infrastructure improvements, which were promised as a part of the proposed Project, be completed before the proposed Project construction begins, and be expanded to include the entire area and not just areas northeast of the proposed Project site.

The ultimate future of the proposed Project will be decided by the Los Angeles City Council. However, with this response, the Studio City Neighborhood Council is continuing its fight and mission to ensure that the proposed Project addresses the needs and concerns of the Studio City stakeholders.
