Savannah Film Festival Honors Malcolm McDowell with Lifetime Achievement Award

"Never Apologize" screening follows tribute

SAVANNAH, Ga., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The 11th annual Savannah Film Festival, hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design, presented legendary actor Malcolm McDowell with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution and Dedication to the Art of Filmmaking Oct. 26, 7 p.m., at Trustees Theater, 216 E. Broughton St.

"I'm extremely honored to be celebrated tonight," said McDowell. "I've been very fortunate to work with some of the great directors."

Arguably among the most dynamic and inventive world-class actors, yet capable of immense charm, humor and poignancy, McDowell has created a gallery of iconographic characters since catapulting to the screen as the rebellious upperclassman Mick Travis in Lindsay Anderson's prize-winning sensation, "IF...."

McDowell's other noteworthy roles include the gleefully amoral Alex in "A Clockwork Orange;" the destroyer of Capt. Kirk in "Star Trek: Generations;" Mick Travis in Anderson's "O Lucky Man!"; the romantically inquisitive H.G. Welles in "Time After Time;" and the narcissistic ballet impresario Alberto Antonelli in "The Company." In addition to film roles, McDowell also has secured a place in history for his work on television and on the stage.

McDowell's recent work includes "Entourage," David Greico's "Evilenko," Paul Weitz's "In Good Company" and Tamar Simon Hoffs' "Red Roses and Petrol." He has generated buzz for his recent role on the NBC hit series "Heroes," and his future projects include the "Magician," to be directed by Mike Hodges, and Abraham Polonsky's adaptation of Thomas Mann's novella "Mario."

Following the tribute, film festival attendees viewed "Never Apologize," a documentary of Malcolm McDowell's celebration of Lindsay Anderson, their times and their colleagues. Directed by Mike Kaplan, "Never Apologize" combines McDowell's personal reminiscences with his readings of pieces written by and about his friend and mentor. These are brought to life by the actor's often hilarious and moving impressions of not only the provocative Anderson, but also the notables in their circle.

The weeklong Savannah Film Festival honored Variety vice president and editor-in-chief Peter Bart Oct. 25, and Lifetime Achievement Awards will go to songwriters Alan and Marilyn Bergman and entertainment entrepreneur Suzanne de Passe later in the week.

The Savannah Film Festival is sponsored by the City of Savannah, Memorial Health, The Talking Phone Book and the Savannah Morning News.
