Great Park Night Flights Season Finale Features Pete Jacobs and His Wartime Radio Revue and Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile
IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Boogie woogie down to the Orange County Great Park this weekend for the Night Flights season series finale with Pete Jacobs and His Wartime Radio Revue on Friday, September 26th. On Saturday, September 27th, concert goers can enjoy listening to blistering bluegrass fusion with world-renowned double bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile. Both events begin at 8:00 p.m. Attendance and parking are free.
Interspersing the hits of the 30's and 40's, along with late-breaking news-stories from the war-years, as well as several original songs, and even some 1940-style radio commercials, listening to Pete Jacobs and His Wartime Radio Review, is like taking a time-machine back to a World War Two U.S.O. show. Their sound is both full and authentic with three young female vocalists, a hot driving rhythm section and an eight-piece horn section. Formed by Pete Jacobs in November of 1997, they have established themselves as one of the premier big-bands of Southern California with appearances at such swingin' landmarks as The Hollywood Bowl, The Derby, Catalina's Casino Ballroom, Pasadena Ballroom Dance Association, and are featured regularly at Disneyland. Decked out in WWII-style military outfits, Pete Jacobs and His Wartime Radio Revue will delight audiences with such hits as "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," and "In the Mood."

The final night of the 2008 Night Flights concert series, on September 27th, features the southland debut of a new collaboration and CD by virtuoso bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolin innovator Chris Thile. The Great Park appearance is part of a 15-city tour which culminates in a performance at Carnegie Hall.
Meyer and Thile began playing together eight years ago, and began performing live as a duo in 2003. Thile calls Meyer his "hero" and says, "Edgar is one of the biggest influences on my musical life." The respect and admiration is mutual. Meyer says, "Chris is unique. I can't think of another musician with his combination of abilities."
Throughout a lifetime of performing and composing, Edgar Meyer has turned the double bass into a modern virtuoso instrument that is equally at home in classical music and in the American vernacular. In 1994, Meyer became the first bassist to win the Avery Fisher Prize. He is also a recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Award and three Grammy Awards.
Widely regarded as one of the most interesting and inventive musicians of his generation, mandolinist Chris Thile has elevated his instrument from its origins as a relatively simple folk and bluegrass instrument to the sophistication and brilliance of the finest jazz improvisation and classical performance. NPR's Bob Boilen said of him, "I've seen many musicians in my day, but my jaw dropped listening to and watching Thile play ... The command he had of his instrument, from frenetically fast strumming to tasty quiet fills, it was just first-rate."
