Campus MovieFest and AT&T Launch 2008-2009 World Tour
Largest Student Film Festival Provides Moviemaking Opportunity to More Than 750,000 College Students at Campuses Nationwide Using AT&T Products and Services
ATLANTA and DALLAS, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Campus MovieFest (CMF), the world's largest student film festival, and AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) announced today the launch of CMF's 2008-2009 World Tour, beginning in Berkeley, Calif. Presented by AT&T, CMF has provided more than 150,000 young filmmakers with free resources since the festival began in 2000, allowing aspiring students to share their short films with a worldwide audience. This year, CMF will bring more schools, prizes, industry opportunities and exposure to the festival, as well as a new focus on music as the program travels to more than 50 colleges and universities and four countries. The festival will culminate in June 2009 at the CMF International Grand Finale in Los Angeles, where the best films from Los Angeles to New York and Scotland to Cannes will be showcased.
Campus MovieFest began at Emory University in Atlanta when four students teamed up to create an event with the goal of helping fellow students tell their unique stories. CMF has spread to more than 24 cities, including Atlanta; San Francisco; San Jose, Calif.; Sonoma, Calif.; Palo Alto, Calif.; Davis, Calif.; Los Angeles; Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Athens, Ga.; Orlando, Fla.; Tampa, Fla.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Boston; New York; St Andrews, Scotland; Rosarito, Mexico; and Cannes, France.
This year, the tour will extend to include Seattle; Austin, Texas; Irvine, Calif.; Durham, N.C.; Birmingham, Ala.; Chicago; Washington, D.C., and more. CMF will reach more than 750,000 students on participating campuses and will provide the opportunity to create movies to more than 50,000 students, many of whom are first-time filmmakers.
Student teams participating in Campus MovieFest can use the latest AT&T and Apple products and services for one week at no charge. AT&T is equipping student teams with video-enabled 3G phones and encouraging them to use some of AT&T's newest products and applications, such as Video Share(SM), JuiceCaster and location-based mobile GPS services, within the films through the "AT&T Best Use of Mobile" category. The winners will receive prizes including new AT&T video phones and $250 AT&T gift cards for team leaders.
Additionally, as the official wireless sponsor of CMF, AT&T will exclusively showcase content from the festival, including the top film winners, on its CV mobile video platform and through Video Downloads on the AT&T MEdia Mall -- a unique way for the student films to reach a greater audience of AT&T's 73 million wireless customers. AT&T has even teamed up with Guitar Hero(R) III to bring the mobile version of the game to participating CMF campuses. Contestants can battle students across the country for a chance to win prizes like a Nintendo Wii with Guitar Hero. Students can text GH3 to 386 to get the game on their AT&T phone.
Students will also be able to use the latest Apple laptops equipped with Final Cut Studio and iMovie '08 software in addition to digital video camcorders and accessories. Teams will be allotted one week at each campus with 24/7 support to write, film and edit their films. The judges will then determine the top movies to be shown at red carpet finales, with the winners from each school moving on to the CMF Regional Grand Finales in San Francisco, Atlanta and New York, followed by the CMF International Grand Finale in Hollywood. Prizes will include more than $400,000 in Apple laptops, software, iPods, AT&T gift cards, cash and trips for the students to meet industry executives for a chance to pursue their dreams in filmmaking.
"We couldn't be more fortunate to have the chance to empower so many talented and creative young people worldwide, while connecting them with the tools and people who can help them follow their passions," said David Roemer, co-founder of Campus MovieFest. "Someday we'll get a real job; until then, CMF continues to grow beyond our wildest dreams."
Patrick Burns, executive director of National Marketing for AT&T's wireless unit, said: "CMF provides us with an outstanding opportunity to connect these students with some of the best products and services we offer -- from our applications like AT&T Video Share and JuiceCaster to our latest handsets. We think it will provide an extraordinary experience for these students. It's a chance to show how our unique offerings can empower people to tell their stories, flex their talents and achieve their goals."
Additionally, Virgin America, the official airline of Campus MovieFest, showcases top short CMF movies at 35,000 feet on Red, its industry-leading in-flight entertainment system. All CMF movies are showcased online at http://www.campusmoviefest.com/, as well as through partner sites. Top CMF movies have been viewed more than 15 million times with coverage from "The Today Show," Diane Sawyer and CNN.
CMF will announce winners in the Best Picture, Best Comedy, Best Drama and Best Use of Mobile categories, and it is especially proud to offer the Elfenworks Social Justice Award, which delivers cash grants from The Elfenworks Foundation to top teams that address solutions for domestic poverty. Additionally, AT&T-powered text voting at each finale determines CMF Audience Choice Award winners. CMF will once again award its coveted CMF Golden Tripod Award to industry leaders.
After having ignited moviemaking revolutions at college campuses worldwide, Campus MovieFest is now expanding to create similar impacts for student musicians through Campus MusicFest. With a successful pilot program in New York in spring 2008, the nationwide launch of Campus MusicFest in September provides students with the opportunity to create their own music, win exceptional prizes and gain exposure in the music industry. AT&T is enabling selected Campus MusicFest participants to have their original music turned into ringtones that can be purchased on AT&T MEdia Mall.
