SANTA MONICA, Calif., Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Maya Entertainment will distribute Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee Luis Mandoki's highly controversial documentary FRAUDE MEXICO 2006 The film opens in Los Angeles, Denver and Phoenix on October 10. The film had a bumpy ride to the screen. "We faced intimidations and threats," says Mandoki. "We landed with Maya because of (CEO) Moctesuma Esparza's activism and his desire to bring awareness."

The critically acclaimed FRAUDE MEXICO 2006 tells the story of the complex and controversial events surrounding the presidential contest between Mexico City mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and conservative, pro-business Felipe Calderon Hinojosa. In Mexico, "The film has stirred up deep emotions," wrote the NY Times. "Shouting matches and standing ovations were not uncommon." "Gripping," wrote the SF Chronicle.

"I am hoping that the documentary will motivate people to vote," says Mandoki. "To realize the importance and sacredness of what democracy means. At the same time democracy is very fragile. And in Mexico it was completely vulnerable.

Mandoki's first film Gaby: A true story was nominated for both the Academy and Golden Globe Awards. For the next 15 years he filmed in English (When a Man Loves a Woman, White Palace Trapped) until the acclaimed Voces Inocentes of 2004, which was selected to represent Mexico in the Academy Awards.

Moctesuma Esparza, Co-Chairman CEO Maya Entertainment, is an Emmy-winning and an Academy Award nominated filmmaker, producer, entertainment executive and entrepreneur. His production credits include: Selena and The Milagro Beanfield War. Esparza was a participant in the 1960s-era movement for the civil rights and equality of Mexican-Americans.
