KCRW and KCRW.com Convention Coverage Features Warren Olney's 'To the Point' Live
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Veteran broadcast news journalist Warren Olney covered the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968. The Vietnam War was on, and massive protests provoked a police riot. Warren also covered that year's Republican National Convention, which nominated Richard Nixon in Miami Beach.
Olney has been to almost every other nominating convention since then, and he's covered them for Santa Monica College-based public radio station, 89.9 FM KCRW-Santa Monica (www.KCRW.com) since 1996.
This year, when the Democrats nominate Barack Obama in Denver and the Republicans formally choose John McCain a week later in St. Paul, Warren will be there too, with a staff of producers, creating the convention edition of his daily national news program, To the Point, produced by KCRW and distributed to public radio stations across the country by Public Radio International.
Every day from noon to 1 pm (PDT) on KCRW and KCRW.com (check local public radio stations for listings nationwide), Warren and his crew will preview what's expected to happen that night on the convention floor. What will Bill and Hillary Clinton do? Will the Republicans invite Dick Cheney? What issues are dividing the delegates from different parts of the country? Have they managed to hash out their differences behind the scenes? What have various interest groups -- and prominent contributors -- been demanding? Do the platforms reveal what the parties really stand for? How are Democrats and Republicans appealing to Independents -- and the all-important swing vote? Warren will talk to insiders -- delegates, reporters and commentators, lobbyists and various hangers on.
*ALL PROGRAMS ARE STREAMED LIVE, AVAILABLE AS A PODCAST AND ARCHIVED FOR ON DEMAND LISTENING AT www.KCRW.com.*
KCRW will also carry convention coverage provided by National Public Radio and other news sources from 3 to 8 pm Pacific Time, August 25 - 29 for the Democrats; and Sep. 1 - 4 for the Republicans.
Since the conventions are designed as TV shows, Olney will talk to media critics as well as political pros about the entertainment value of politics, as well as the substance. KCRW's conservative political pundit, Tony Blankley (Left, Right & Center) and resident satirist Harry Shearer (Le Show) are expected to stop by the To the Point broadcast booth and weigh in with their opinions.
Olney and his team of To the Point producers will also cover the protesters who are expected to flood the city of Denver, and the Libertarians who are planning a counter-convention in St. Paul.
By the time Obama and McCain make their acceptance speeches you'll know what to listen for and what to look for as the campaigns move into the final phase.
