In 'Artist's Table With Jacques Pepin and Itzhak Perlman,' a New Hour-Long Television Special, Elegant Food Leads to Elegant Conversation
SAN FRANCISCO, March 25 /PRNewswire/ "Artist's Table with Jacques Pepin and Itzhak Perlman" is a new public television special that brings together two virtuosos -- the popular chef, author and television personality, and one of the world's greatest violinists -- in a remarkable hour of wide-ranging conversation and collaboration sparked by the planning, preparation, and sharing of a meal.
In Mr. Perlman's homes in Manhattan and Long Island, NY, both Pepin and Perlman reveal talents and wisdom that are little-known separate from their respective triumphs in the kitchen and on the concert stage. Their meeting at the intersection of culinary and non-culinary arts, says Pepin, "is the best expression of what civilization is."
Produced by the San Francisco Bay Area's Full Plate Media, "Artist's Table" is distributed by American Public Television for broadcast on public TV stations throughout 2008 (check local listings). KQED San Francisco is the series' presenter. Cuisinart and MSN.com are the corporate underwriters. Full Plate Media partners Harry Bernstein and Susie Heller said they hope the special will serve to inspire an "Artist's Table" series, with Pepin as host.
As it unfolds, "Artist's Table" showcases Pepin's and Perlman's broad interests, insights and talents bringing out each other's knowledge of a wide variety of subjects, including the arts, food, wine, music, and creative achievement. The preparation of numerous dishes serves as a jumping-off point for these assorted revelations, as well as intimate stories about their lives, families, and other artists they have known.
"I'm lucky," said Perlman about the special. "Cooking with Jacques is like playing Chamber Music with colleagues and friends."
"Viewers eavesdrop as these two artists collaborate on a meal -- an amazing insight into these two great talents and what they bring out in each other," said producer Harry Bernstein. "And there are some wonderful recipes, too." Susie Heller has worked with Jacques Pepin for over 20 years and considers this show to be the most intimate experience for viewers with Pepin to date.
Full Plate Media produced the popular "Chef's Story" series, featuring conversations with 27 popular chefs and restaurateurs, and "Made in Spain" with chef Jose Andres, currently playing in markets around the country on public television stations.
