Tony Phillips Puts His Own Twist on Celebrity Game Show
DIRECTV's 'Rock & a Hard Place' further diversifies composer's impressive repertoire
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- There's nothing better than a fresh twist to a familiar game show format to intrigue millions of viewers and draw them to their television sets weekly. And that's exactly what's happening in the case of "Rock & a Hard Place," a 10-episode series airing Wednesdays, 10 p.m. EST on DIRECTV's original entertainment channel, The 101. The game show, which is hosted by music legend Meat Loaf, pits real rock stars and bands against each other in a familiar "Family Feud" fashion. The twist, however, is these rockers duke it out for charity, rather than themselves. The series is all about fun, entertainment and goodwill. Plus, the show's music is a far cry from the more tempered tunes on "Family Feud." No surprise, this "Rock & a Hard Place" has a rock theme and underscore, thanks to the talents of Tony Phillips, the Los Angeles-based composer.
"When ordinary people are competing for a million-dollar prize, there's a lot of tension involved, so the music must be dramatic, intense, even symphonic," Phillips said. "With 'Rock & a Hard Place,' it has a celebrity focus and intrigue to it, and is much more about the excitement of watching famous people play a game for a great cause. So with this show, I wrote real rock music, which was really a lot of fun."
Phillips, an established composer, landed the gig after creating the theme and underscore for NBC's smash hit "1 vs. 100." Thanks to Blaze Television, the producers of "Rock & a Hard Place," Phillips continues to broaden his talents in regard to writing for a new kind of game show. But the composer also has an impressive background of other works, contributing to everything from popular films such as "The Lion King" and award-winning reality shows like "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."
"I am truly grateful for every opportunity that comes my way," Phillips says. "Each experience in composing, whether for a game show, reality show or film, diversifies my skills and talents just that much more. People are taking note of my versatility as a composer, and it's really fantastic to be recognized in this way."
