U.S. Census Bureau Daily Feature for January 14
WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Following is the daily "Profile America" feature from the U.S. Census Bureau:
MONDAY, JANUARY 14: MOTION PICTURE ACADEMY
Profile America -- Monday, January 14th. Hollywood's most prestigious professional organization was founded this week in 1927 -- the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, with actor Douglas Fairbanks as its first president. The academy's first awards -- not yet called "Oscars" -- were given out in May of 1929. Two films received awards for what is now known as best picture. One went to the epic about World War I fliers, called "Wings," the other to "Sunrise." These were the only two silent films ever to win the best picture award. In 1929, two-out-of-three people in the U.S. went to the movies every week. Now, Americans go to the movies about five times a year. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau on the Web at www.census.gov.
