The unexpected death of actor Heath Ledger (#11) sent web users scouring the internet in search of news surrounding Ledger's sudden passing, landing the actor on The Lycos 50, generating more searches this week than MySpace (#13), Pamela Anderson (#15) and the NFL (#16). Search activity for Ledger has skyrocketed 7,400 percent, also causing an increase in search interest for his former girlfriend, actress Michelle Williams, who jumps 2,400 percent in online activity. Interest in Ledger's upcoming film, "The Dark Knight," also moves up the search meter, gaining 1,700 percent, and actress Mary Kate Olsen sees her search activity climb 71 percent following news that Ledger was found dead in her New York apartment. Meanwhile, the unveiling of the MacBook Air has caused a surge in search activity for Apple (#10), which jumps from the number 17 spot on last week's list into this week's top 10.
Search Gainers:
Former President Bill Clinton sees more search interest this week than his wife, presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton. Search activity for Mr. Clinton is up 1,400 percent, due in part to the media frenzy surrounding him on his wife's campaign trail. And with the Super Bowl right around the corner, the New England Patriots are scoring extra points with web users, up 183 percent. Patriots' search interest continues to be driven this week by the media circus covering quarterback Tom Brady, as rumors concerning the condition of Brady's ankle dominate news reports on the practice field in Arizona. If the Patriots win Super Bowl XLII, they will be the first team in NFL history to end the season with a perfect 19 and 0 record.
