Notes of Interest:
On the heals of the Academy Award(R) nominations announced this week, "Cloverfield" (#28) may not ever receive an Oscar(R) nod, but it is a big winner with web users, making its first-ever appearance on this week's Lycos 50, as the most-searched film, with search activity quadrupling over the past two weeks. The story, told from the point of view of one character's video camera in a "Blair Witch" shooting style, broke box office records for January and Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekends, taking in nearly $50 million over four days. Actor Johnny Depp (#33), fresh off of his recent Oscar(R) nomination for best-actor in "Sweeney Todd," re-enters this week's list, jumping 643 percent in search popularity. Depp also received his first Golden Globe win, again in the best-actor category for "Sweeney Todd."
Search Gainers:
The recent premiere of "American Idol" propels searches related to the series to the top of this week's Movers & Shakers list, up 145 percent in search popularity. Meanwhile, "Idol" judge Paula Abdul leads the pack, jumping 891% in search activity due in part to her just released single called "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow," included on Randy Jackson's upcoming album, "Randy Jackson's Music Club Vol. 1." This is Abdul's first single since "Crazy Cool" was released in 1995. And from the world of sports, the Super Bowl climbs 59 percent in searches, with web users eagerly anticipating Super Bowl XLII, featuring the New York Giants and the New England Patriots on February 3 in Phoenix, AZ. New England Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady is also heating up the search logs, after video footage surfaced showing Brady wearing a walking cast on his right foot as he emerged from the New York apartment of girlfriend Gisele Bundchen.
