If 2008 Presidential Election Were Held now, Baby Boomers Would Have Hillary Square off Against Rudy . . . . With Hillary the Winner!

Boomers Most Concerned About Skyrocketing Gas/Oil Prices, Social Security, Health Care, State of Economy and Iraq War

NEW YORK, Dec. 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A new TV Land poll of American Baby Boomers shows that if the 2008 Presidential election were held today, Boomers would have Hillary Clinton face off against Rudolph Giuliani, with Hillary as the winner, capturing 53% of the vote compared to Rudy's 47%. The poll - which was conducted earlier this month - also found that several economic, social and international conflicts are the most important issues for Boomers and revealed that for nine out of ten Boomers, celebrity endorsements of candidates play no part in their decision making.

When Baby Boomers who are registered as Democrats were asked whom they would pick as their candidate, 48% opted for Hillary Clinton, 21% for Barack Obama, 11% for John Edwards, and 11% indicated they would vote for one of the Republican candidates. When Republican registered Boomers were asked, Boomers chose Rudy Giuliani (21%), then Mike Huckabee (16%), Mitt Romney (12%), John McCain (11%), and Fred Thompson (10%). Interestingly, nearly two in five Republican Boomers (18%) would vote for a candidate from the Democratic Party, with 10% choosing Hillary Clinton over all the Republican candidates. If the Presidential Election were held now, pitting Rudy Guiliani and Hillary Clinton, Boomers -- America's largest generation -- would elect Hillary Clinton consistent with the finding that 70% of Boomers agree that the country is ready for a woman to be President.

Many of the issues Boomers are bringing into the voting booth resonate with both parties, however, there are some differences. The most important issues for Democratic Boomers include Social Security (76%), Health Care (76%), Gas/Oil Prices (71%), the State of the Economy (67%), the Iraq War (67%) and Jobs (62%). Like Democrats, Republican Boomers list Gas/Oil Prices (67%) and the State of the Economy (62%) as their most important issues. However, Republican Boomers also cite issues like Homeland Security (62%) and Immigration (62%). Sixty-five percent of this generation feels that the Country is on the wrong track. More than half of Boomers feel pessimistic about the future of the Country in general as well as the future of the U.S. economy.

"78 million strong, Baby Boomers are a meaningful target" states Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land. "Savvy politicians would do well to listen to their collective voice and make sure to address the issues that are important to this generation."

A colossal 88% percent of Boomers say celebrity endorsements of candidates play no part in their decision-making. However, over one-third of those that would vote for Hillary say that Bill Clinton influences their decision. Thirty-seven percent of those that would not vote for Hillary also say that Bill Clinton influences their decision.

Methodology

From Friday, December 7th to Tuesday, December 11th, OTX surveyed 800 Boomers ages 43-61 about their thoughts and feelings surrounding the upcoming 2008 Presidential election. Interviews were conducted via the Internet by OTX (Online Testing eXchange), one of the world's leading online research firms. Respondents were randomly recruited from OTX's online sample community of more than 20 million people in the United States and 30 million people worldwide. To qualify, respondents needed to be US residents, eligible and registered to vote, and vote in at least "some" of the November general elections. Respondents could not have completed a survey about politics in the past three months and no one in their household could work in government, politics, advertising, marketing, public relations, or market research. Quotas were set to ensure a balanced representation of Boomers when compared to the US Census data from the general election of November 2004. The survey took approximately 24 minutes to complete.
