* Chrysler IMAX(R) Dome Theatre dedicated at Company's Media Holiday Party
* Annual event continues the spirit of giving
DETROIT, Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The Detroit Science Center today announced that the new name for its IMAX(R) Dome Theatre will be the Chrysler IMAX(R) Dome Theatre. The new name was formally unveiled at the Chrysler Media Holiday Party, held this year at the Science Center. A new identity, signage and branding for the theatre will be unveiled at a future date.
"The Detroit Science Center is truly something that the entire community can be proud of and we are pleased to continue supporting this important educational institution located right in the heart of Detroit," said Bob Nardelli, Chrysler LLC Chairman and CEO.
The Detroit Science Center and Chrysler have a long relationship. Since 1991, the Company has donated more than $3 million toward exhibitions and operating expenses. In 1991, when the Science Center announced its plans to renovate and expand the center, Chrysler was one of the first Michigan businesses to donate $1.5 million. After the renovation, the IMAX(R) Dome Theatre received a new state-of-the-art sound system for hearing impaired visitors and translation tracks for non English-speaking visitors. The theatre also received a new 15,000-watt lamp house to increase the brightness of the dome image.
Chrysler IMAX(R) Dome Theatre is Michigan's only domed IMAX(R) theatre. The IMAX(R) Dome Theatre is one of only 62 IMAX(R) Dome Theatres in the world. The IMAX(R) screen measures 3.5 stories tall and 65.7 feet in diameter, seats 238 guests and delivers the highest quality in cinematic viewing in the world.
The Chrysler IMAX(R) Dome Theatre will continue to show educational films that make learning fun and entertaining. Already, more than 1.5 million visitors have enjoyed scientific films such as The Human Body, Bugs!, Mystery of the Nile, Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon and Journey into Amazing Caves at the IMAX(R) Dome Theatre. The Detroit Science Center will continue to operate the theatre.
"We're excited about this new opportunity to continue our long standing relationship with Chrysler," said Todd Slisher, Vice President of Science Programs for the Detroit Science Center. "The IMAX(R) Dome format combines the powerful and experiential nature of the giant screen with wonderful storytelling film content that brings audiences from the depths of the oceans to the vastness of space and every exciting locale in between. The Chrysler IMAX(R) Dome Theatre will continue to present wonderful, educational 'big picture' experiences to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists."
In addition to the celebration of the newly named theatre, The Chrysler Foundation further spread the holiday spirit by donating $100,000 to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. The donation will help parents who are unable to afford gifts for their children. Chrysler has been supporting the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation for more than 10 years.
"Chrysler has a long standing relationship with the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation and we are pleased to continue supporting their efforts to deliver shiny new toys and a message of hope to boys and girls in our local communities this holiday season," added Nardelli.
"Thanks to organizations such as Chrysler, needy children throughout the U.S. will experience the joy of the holiday season," said retired Lt. Gen. Matthew T. Cooper, President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. "Last year, we fulfilled the dreams of more than seven million children, and we hope that number continues to grow."
