U.S. Census Bureau Daily Feature for November 28

WASHINGTON, Nov. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is the daily "Profile America" feature from the U.S. Census Bureau:

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 28: "GRAND OLE OPRY"

Profile America -- Wednesday, November 28th. The longest-running live radio show celebrates its 82nd anniversary today -- the "Grand Ole Opry," on WSM in Nashville, Tennessee. The show was originally called the WSM Barn Dance and was hosted by George Hay. One night, following a classical music program, Hay told the audience they had just listened to an hour of grand opera, and invited them to stay tuned for the "Grand Ole Opry." The show grew in popularity and helped put country music and Nashville on the cultural map, while opening a path to fame for dozens of performers. Now, country music accounts for nearly 13 percent of the nation's annual sales of recorded music. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau on the Web at www.census.gov.
