U.S. Census Bureau Daily Feature for November 27
WASHINGTON, Nov. 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Following is the daily "Profile America" feature from the U.S. Census Bureau:
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27: A ROCK MUSIC GIANT
Profile America -- Tuesday, November 27th. One of rock music's top guitarists was born on this date in 1942 in Seattle. Jimi Hendrix started as a sideman for rhythm and blues artists such as Little Richard. Then he formed the Jimi Hendrix Experience. His over-the-top style of guitar playing and songs such as "Purple Haze" established a lasting reputation before he died of a drug overdose in 1970. In the late '60s, Americans spent about $200 million a year on recorded music LPs, 45s and eight-track tapes. Now, we spend more than $12 billion annually on recorded music in modern formats. About a third of those dollars are spent on rock titles, while rap and hip hop account for just over 13 percent.
