Experts on Pullman's Fiction Available for Comment on 'The Golden Compass' Film

Ignatius Press, which just released the new book, Pied Piper of Atheism: Philip Pullman and Children's Fantasy, has the book's co-authors, Sandra Miesel and Pete Vere, available for comment on the new film based on Pullman's fiction, "The Golden Compass." The big-budget film, which stars Nicole Kidman, opens across the U.S. on December 7.

Many groups have questioned the message-agenda contained in the new children's fantasy film, especially its attacks on Christianity and the promotion of atheism. The film is based on the first story of Pullman's book trilogy, His Dark Materials.

British atheist writer Philip Pullman is widely acclaimed by critics and readers for his bestselling stories. But is The Golden Compass anti-Catholic? Pullman had acknowledged that one purpose to his books was to "kill God". The series depicts the God of the Bible as a fraud, a "senile angel" in the form of a decrepit old man. The Catholic Church is represented as the evil "Magisterium". The books also promote divination and other occult practices.

Co-authors of Pied Piper of Atheism are:

Sandra Miesel - co-author of the best-selling book, The Da Vinci Hoax: Exposing the Errors in The Da Vinci Code. She holds masters degrees in biochemistry and medieval history from the University of Illinois. She has written hundreds of articles for the Catholic press, chiefly on history, art, and hagiography. Sandra has spoken at religious and academic conferences, appeared on EWTN, and given numerous radio and television interviews. She has also written, analyzed, and edited fiction, and has worked with and has known numerous renowned science fiction and fantasy authors.

Pete Vere, J.C.L. -- a husband, father, lay canon lawyer and Catholic journalist. He writes about canon law and cultural issues for several publications-both Catholic and non-Catholic. He is also the co-author of Surprised by Canon Law, Surprised by Canon Law 2, and More Catholic Than the Pope. He has written about His Dark Materials for several publications, including The Washington Times and This Rock magazine.
