American Mothers Hold the Keys to The White House in 2008
Survey Shows Moms Are Paying Close Attention to Campaign 2008
POMPANO BEACH, Fla., Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Winning the vote of America's 80.5 million mothers could mean victory for Presidential candidates. And today's mothers, more than ever before, are speaking out about the future of our country. A recent study by BSM Media, www.bsmmedia.com, a marketing and media firm which specializes in marketing to moms, and Mom Talk Radio, www.momtalkradio.com, showed that the majority of mothers (83.1%) intend to cast their vote on November 2, 2008. This means that U.S. Mothers could hold the keys to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue for Presidential hopefuls. Ironically, respondents feel that candidates could do a better job of speaking directly to them, as 75.2% feel that mothers do not receive enough attention during campaign time.
The study, which surveyed over 2,400 mothers online, showed that while most mothers are going to exercise their right to vote, a surprisingly large amount (80.9%) are still undecided about their candidate of choice. In fact, 51.5% of respondents said they will not make a final decision until the last weeks before the election.
"At this time next year, our country will have a new Commander-in-Chief and today's mothers will be integral in deciding who that candidate will be," said Maria Bailey, Author of "Trillion Dollar Moms: Marketing to a New Generation of Mothers" (Dearborn, 2004) and Host of Mom Talk Radio. "Moms are listening closely to what each candidate has to say so they can make the decision that will be the most beneficial for their country and for their families."
Bailey notes in her book, "Marketing to Moms: Getting Your Share of the Trillion Dollar Market" (Prima, 2004) that soccer moms were credited with electing Bill Clinton to office. The fact was validated recently by Mark Penn, Clinton's former campaign chief in his new book, "Microtrends." Interestingly, Penn is now Hillary Clinton's chief advisor.
While many mothers haven't committed to a particular candidate, they are sure of the issues and qualities that are important to them. Healthcare, education, the state of the economy and national security ranked as the highest on the respondents' lists of priorities. When it comes to personality traits of the candidates themselves, mothers seem to value honesty, with 76.8% classifying the trait as very important to them. A willingness to make changes and strong family values were also mentioned as qualities to look for when choosing a candidate.

On Gender of the Candidates:
-- 50.8% percent would not vote solely for a female to advance the
rights of women overall
-- 82.7% would vote for a female candidate if in agreement with her
views.
On Political Issues:
-- 47% of those surveyed responded that they are Democrats.
-- 35.5% classified themselves as Republicans.
-- The majority (63.2%) named healthcare and education (60.3%) as their
biggest concern.
-- Less than 15% of respondents named age, race, or religious
affiliation as a factor when supporting a candidate.
-- 59% said that there isn't another individual that influences their
vote.
The gender of the candidate is one factor that doesn't seem to make a difference, as the majority of respondents said they would not vote for a female candidate solely to advance the rights of women overall. The most important factor in choosing a particular candidate (87.7%) is where he or she stands of political issues.
Most of today's mothers get their political information from television, with 60% responding that they tune in regularly to national news stations such as CNN, MSNC and CNBC. Many mothers are bringing the news from their living rooms to the playgrounds as 53.7% discuss political issues with other mothers as often as several times a month.
