Santa Fe Celebrates Master Collaborator Donald Rubinstein: Cool-Aberrations in Art, Music and Film

NEW YORK, July 10 /PRNewswire/ -- "Donald Rubinstein: Cool-Aberrations in Art, Music and Film" is to be presented by the Center for Contemporary Arts (CCA), in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on July 21-22, 2007. A renowned and prolific collaborator, Rubinstein coined the term "cool-aberrations" as a mischievous expression of respect for what happens when creative voices come together. He says from his studio in Santa Fe, "When worlds collide, creative interactions pave the way to innovation."

The CCA celebration of Rubinstein's diverse art and music collaborations begins Saturday evening with an art exhibition of his work. Among other pieces, Seed, by Rubinstein and Kiki Smith and shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, will be displayed for the first time in its entirety.

Then Rubinstein takes the stage for a live musical performance with special guests John Densmore, formerly of the Doors; "outlaw country" singer Terry Allen; guitarist Larry Mitchell; and percussionist Hani Naser. Rubinstein and company will perform selections from Rubinstein's 20 CDs, including the soon-to-be-released Circus Boy (Black Starlight Records, August, 2007) and Painted Stranger: Take the Dark Away (Spacebar, August, 2007), a collaboration with Steve Deutsch.

On Sunday, Rubinstein will host a discussion prior to the CCA Cinematique showing of the George A. Romero cult classic film Martin, for which Rubinstein scored the original soundtrack. In fact, composer, singer/songwriter, poet and multimedia artist Rubinstein made his breakthrough musical debut at age 24, scoring the film, which Mojo in 2002 named "One of the Top 100 Coolest Soundtracks of All Time." Romero said, "If I could work with Donald on every film I ever made, I'd do it ... He's the purest guy I've ever worked with."

"Don's creative oeuvre is all about exploring his many artistic disciplines," says CCA Marketing Director Jill Battson, "and then collaborating with other artists to make a new art form that is sometimes more interesting than the original."

Complementing the weekend celebration of Rubinstein's work, the internationally acclaimed Linda Durham Gallery in Santa Fe is to kick off a three-week-long exhibition of Rubinstein's drawings and animated film. The show, titled "Love Stories from the Back Lot," is curated by Aline Brandauer and opens on July 20th.

Born in Brooklyn, Rubinstein grew up in Long Island and now makes his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
