LOS ANGELES, July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Singer-songwriters Jackson Browne, Ben Harper, Todd Hannigan and special guests will perform at a benefit concert for the Santa Monica-based non-profit organization Boarding House Mentors at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills on Sunday, July 29. Founded in 2003, Boarding House Mentors (BHM) introduces at-risk and under served youth to the exhilaration of surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding with the intent of broadening their life experiences with positive, healthy outlets. Youth served by BHM learn board sports in a supportive, relaxed environment under the supervision of experienced practitioners who, in addition to offering instruction, communicate the positive influence board sports have had on them personally. By encouraging young people to meet the challenges of these disciplines, BHM hopes they'll develop the confidence and resolve to explore and master other new experiences.
BHM works with L.A.-based Youth Mentoring Connection to enlist participants, and finds that working with young people already matched up with active mentors increases the effectiveness of their efforts. "About 50-60% of our kids repeat the program," says BHM Board Chairman Andy Kastenberg, "and about half of our volunteer base has been with us for three to four years. We're building relationships, and that really helps us make a positive, lasting difference." During the summer months, BHM brings the "stoke" of surfing to its groups at Santa Monica State Beach. Skateboarding and snowboarding at various locations are spotlighted the rest of the year.
Currently working on a new studio album, Browne was inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame (SHOF) in June, and that same month received the ASCAP-Harry Chapin Humanitarian Award at the 2007 Chapin World Hunger Year Awards. His version of the classic John Lennon song "Oh My Love" is featured on the new 2-CD compilation Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign To Save Darfur. Ben Harper's new album Lifeline, featuring the single "In The Colors," is set for release August 28. Harper has been touring for most of '07, and will play festival dates throughout August. Musician/surfer Todd Hannigan, known for his collaboration with Jack Johnson on Thicker Than Water, has been touring the west coast and is working on Volume 2, the follow-up to his acclaimed debut album Volume 1.
Ride the wave of a beautiful summer evening when these artists play in support of BHM's meaningful work on Sunday, July 29 at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills.
