Arctic Tale: Companion Books to Major New Feature Film Take Kids on Exciting Wildlife Adventure

WASHINGTON, July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- From the producers of the Academy Award-winning film "March of the Penguins," the breathtaking wildlife adventure movie "Arctic Tale" follows the story of a walrus calf and polar bear cub as they journey from infancy to adulthood amidst the harsh beauty of the Arctic. Two companion books from National Geographic Children's Books, Arctic Tale, a picture book for ages 4-8, and Arctic Tale, a junior novelization for ages 8-12, will be released July 24 in conjunction with the opening of this compelling new family movie.

"Arctic Tale" (novelization) takes an in-depth look at the lives of Seela, a walrus calf, and Nanu, a polar bear cub. The young animals enjoy a carefree, playful babyhood under their mothers' protection, but soon encounter the stark realities of the wild. Due to global climate change, summer sea ice has declined by 30 percent over the past half-century. The traditional polar bear hunting ground is shrinking, and the walrus has fewer and fewer places to come out of the sea to rest. Seela and Nanu's lives intertwine in a dramatic competition for survival as they both seek refuge from the melting ice on Rock Island.

"Arctic Tale" (picture book) also follows Seela and Nanu as they grow up, become adults and have their own offspring. Delightful photos reveal all that the baby animals have in common as they are depicted eating, sleeping and playing. The picture book shows how the animals have to adapt and change the way they live because of the warmer temperatures and longer summers.

The film's directors, Adam Ravetch and Sarah Robertson, explain that Nanu and Seela embody the heart and spirit of the animals that they photographed in the wild during 15 years in the Arctic. Their "Arctic Tale" film tells the story of a place they love and want to protect.

The "Arctic Tale" companion books give children another opportunity to experience the profoundly moving story of Seela and Nanu. The books will touch readers' hearts and inspire them to be more environmentally conscious.
