Safeway Continues Fundraising Efforts for Prostate Cancer Research With In-store Music Promotion
SANTA MONICA, Calif., June 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Safeway Inc. (NYSE:SWY) announced that it will once again partner with emerging musical artist Jeff Austin Black to raise money for prostate cancer research. As part of the company's commitment to raise $6.5 million this June for the fight against prostate cancer, a special CD with three songs form Black's upcoming album "Human" will be available in Safeway stores nationwide. A portion of all proceeds will be donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF).
"I'm proud to once again join Safeway in their battle against prostate cancer," said Black. "Far too many families have to endure the pain and suffering that comes with a prostate cancer diagnosis. In addition to raising funds for prostate cancer research, I hope our promotion encourages more men to talk to their doctors about their risk for prostate cancer."
In June 2005, nearly $350,000 was raised as 100,000 copies of Black's debut album "Criminal" were sold nationwide in Safeway and Vons grocery stores. The three songs featured on this year's special CD are "We Belong", "Only Human" and "Inside".
"We are honored that Safeway is continuing to support the Prostate Cancer Foundation and our mission of understanding prostate cancer and identifying new approaches to beating it," said Jonathan W. Simons, MD, chief executive officer and president of the PCF. "We extend our sincerest thanks to Safeway, its customers and employees as well as to Jeff Austin Black for their ongoing support and generosity."
This is the seventh year of Safeway's prostate cancer campaign. To date, the company has raised nearly $18 million for the cause. In addition, in 2006, Safeway selected four young prostate cancer investigators from leading research institutions to receive Safeway/PCF Career Development Awards. The $50,000 awards will be used by the investigators to support innovative research projects and to further their career objectives in finding better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer.
As baby boomers reach the age of 50, the number of new cases of prostate cancer is projected to increase dramatically. By 2015, there will be more than 300,000 new cases each year, a 50 percent increase.
