Mounties, Music, Blue Jays And Hockey: Canadians Celebrate 'Canada Day Across America' This Weekend!

WASHINGTON, June 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- From Panama City, Florida to Saint Cloud, Minnesota to Honolulu, Hawaii and many places in between Canadians and friends of Canada have planned Canada Day events in the United States. In celebration of Canada's 140th birthday, over 150 Connect2Canada members are hosting Canada Day parties across the country as part of the Second Annual "Canada Day Across America".

The "Canada Day Across America" initiative promotes Canada Day events throughout the United States through http://www.connect2canada.com/, the Canadian Embassy's network for Canadians and friends of Canada in the United States.

A number of Canadian expatriate groups in the U.S., long standing and new, are holding events. The newly formed Canada-America Society of Oregon has planned a fun-filled day complete with Canadian music and beer, a hockey shoot-out and the chance to have a photo taken with a Mountie. The Oakland, California-based Digital Moose Lounge is celebrating their 8th Annual Canada Day picnic and is expecting hundreds of people. Activities include the singing of "O Canada", a barbeque and a soccer match. The Canadian American Society of Washington is celebrating at Safeco Field to watch the Toronto Blue Jays take on the Seattle Mariners.

In addition to large group sponsored events, dozens of Connect2Canada members are opening their backyard barbeques and picnics to other Canadians who wish to join in on the festivities. Two professors at Texas A&M University are hosting their annual Canada Day party with all the fixings for students and friends. A retirement community in Franklin, Indiana has planned an "All About Canada" party in order for residents to learn more about their Northern neighbour. The Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida is hosting a volleyball tournament with their American friends and co-workers, hoping to reclaim their trophy. Across the U.S. many more Canadians are holding events and opening their doors.

Leading off this weekend's festivities, Canadian Consulates and the Embassy in Washington are holding events as part of Canada Day Across America 2007. The Embassy is hosting an afternoon barbeque in the Embassy courtyard on Friday, June 29, and will include a preview of a major exhibit from the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the Quebecois band Les Chauffeurs a Pieds, and children's entertainment by Sheree Fitch. In New York, the Consulate General is co-hosting a musical celebration featuring three Montreal-based bands in Prospect Park, while Detroit is showing a film on hockey legend Maurice "Rocket" Richard. Numerous other events are planned by the Consulates in San Francisco, Anchorage and more.
