DETROIT, June 7 /PRNewswire/ --
What: A free global extravaganza of music, dance and theatre performed
on 10 stages and on the streets of Detroit's Midtown for the
21st annual Detroit Festival of the Arts.
When: Festival Hours: Friday, June 8, 4pm-11pm; Saturday, June 9,
12pm-11pm;
Sunday, June 10, 12pm-9pm
Children's Fair: 12pm-7pm Saturday and Sunday
Where: Located in the twenty block area including Wayne State University
and the Cultural Center.
Highlights:
- The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain will entertain with its
all-singing, all-strumming players on Saturday and Sunday.
- Bebop jazz pianist Barry Harris, the electronic world sounds of
the Balkan Beat Box and Amos Lee, folk/blues/soul singer and
songwriter will heat up stages.
- Canada strikes a popular chord with Wailin' Jennys, the Canadian
Roots Trio and Juno award winning singers best known for their
work with National Public Radio's A Prairie Home Companion.
- Lila Downs, Latin Grammy-Award winner performs with her ranchero
and Mexican folklore music with mega screens depicting colorful
images as part of her accompaniment.
- Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars tour the world spreading their
message of peace and love in a "can't help but dance" show. The
band has been featured on CNN, PBS, CBS Sunday Morning, and the
Oprah Winfrey Show. All members of this West African Reggae Band
lived in or near Sierra Leone's capital city before escaping
Freetown during the country's civil war. A special free showing
of the film will take place at 5:00pm, just prior to the group's
performance, inside the Charles H. Wright Museum of African
American History.
- Close-Act Visual Theatre makes its first U.S. visit from the
Netherlands with a troupe of versatile performers who become
gigantic prehistoric creatures and wander through the festival
site.
- Irish pop group Screaming Orphans are four sisters from
County Donegal. Sinead O'Connor took them on as her back up
singers and invited them to open for her in 1997.
Annual Favorites
- Barcelona's Osadia returns with hair-raising, hair sculptures on
the Detroit Historical Museum Plaza.
- Macy's GO READ Garden(SM) features children's storytellers,
authors and Arm and the Sea Theatre performing Turtle Island
Medicine Show on the Cass Avenue lawn of the Detroit Public
Library, Saturday and Sunday.
- Sand Sculpture - Prehistoric creatures comes to life in 75 tons
of sand on Cass Avenue
- DaimlerChrysler Children's Fair - More than 60 hands-on
activities, Youth Artist Market and more
- Arts and Craft Market - Nearly 100 country-wide juried artists
