C4CC to FCC: Don't Over Regulate an Internet Market that Works

C4CC to FCC: Don't Over Regulate an Internet Market that Works

WASHINGTON, June 13 /PRNewswire/ -- A fully competitive, self-regulating marketplace has been key to the overwhelmingly positive impact that the Internet has had on telecommunications, technology, commerce and entertainment. Consumers for Cable Choice (C4CC) today asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to resist temptation to begin regulating this market and continue to allow the open market to work.

"There is no reason for the federal government to insert itself into a system that clearly works," said C4CC President Robert K. Johnson. "Right now, consumers are treated better in the Internet service market than in any other industry. The very nature of the Internet - knowing that competition is just a click away - keeps businesses searching for the best way to serve their customers."

On behalf of more than one million C4CC coalition members, Johnson asked FCC Chairman Kevin Martin not to be swayed by the proponents - and potential beneficiaries -- of so-called "net neutrality" regulation, and to stand firm in favor of competition while the Commission reviews its Internet policy.

"Government intervention into the wide-open, consumer dominated Internet market will lead to serial rent-seeking, with one branch of the sector looking for government help against its rivals," Johnson said. "And the costs of additional regulation will be passed along to consumers in the form of higher prices. Instead of allowing this to happen, we encourage FCC to continue its policy of watchful restraint."
