The Mefeedia Network's Latest Discovery: Fans Making Music Videos for the Majors
Record companies are learning how to capitalize on the user generated video explosion by offloading all creation and distribution costs to their talented online fan networks.
LOS ANGELES, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- After doing the math, music companies are beginning to realize they can save huge amounts of money on the production, promotion, and distribution of their music videos by getting their online fan bases directly involved.
"We'd be crazy not to take advantage of the new technologies that allow us to connect with the fans out there," says Jeremy Rosen, New Media Manager for New York's Roadrunner Records. "Technology now allows music lovers to become active participants in a band's marketing and promotion in ways that were just too expensive or complex before. We love that, of course. But it's also just an awful lot of fun too, to see what people create."
Bjork (Atlantic), Incubus (Sony), and Modest Mouse (Epic) are all participating in user generated music video contests. These label-sanctioned competitions demonstrate the industry's new attitude towards the professional quality of many "viral" videos. As the cost of making high quality video editing hardware and software steadily decreases, soon anyone with the time and a good idea will be able to create high quality productions.
Although it took a few years, it would appear the recording industry has finally realized that this is all working to its advantage. "Watching its revenues decline drastically over the past five years has forced the industry to embrace this new community generated technology with a vengeance," explains Gordon Finlayson, Digital Music Writer for Downloadsquad.com.
For up and coming directors, artists, and producers, these contests also represent an opportunity to have their work seen by a larger audience. "Having video production and distribution taken over by the fans is a win-win for everyone," says Mefeedia CEO Frank Sinton. "We've been watching the number of user generated music videos skyrocket over this past year. It's nice to see the music industry beginning to realize the huge potential for collaboration with its fan base."
