DC Youth Orchestra Program Honors Retiring Founder Maestro Lyn McLain

WASHINGTON, May 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The DCYOP will host a concert in tribute to Maestro McLain on July 8, 2007 in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. The performance will include current members of the orchestra as well as alumni from all over the country. The tribute is part of an entire weekend of celebrations which will also include an alumni picnic and a fund raising reception. The weekend is being co-chaired by Rodney Slater, former Secretary of Transportation in the Clinton Administration, and Angela Avant, Partner at KPMG, LLP. Conductors for the Kennedy Center event will include two DCYOP alumni -- Michael Morgan, music director of the Oakland East Bay Symphony Orchestra, and Grammy-winning conductor, John McLaughlin Williams. In addition, DCYOP alumnus and composer, Jamie Kowalski, will compose a piece for the occasion to be performed by the Alumni Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.

"This is an exciting time for the DC Youth Orchestra Program, and we look forward to having old friends of the program join new ones as we move forward," said Ava Spece, DCYOP executive director.

The DC Youth Orchestra Program enrolls approximately 600 students from all over the metropolitan Washington, DC area. No auditions are required to join, but as the students learn their instruments, they advance in the program and compete for positions in its various ensembles -- ranging from symphony orchestra to jazz band -- that play at venues around the city.

The DC Youth Orchestra Program is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, providing instrumental music education to the young people of the DC area since 1960. For more information about the organization, please visit http://www.dcyop.org/.
