Cowboys & Indians Magazine Offers Centennial Tribute to John Wayne

Cowboys & Indians Magazine Offers Centennial Tribute to John Wayne

DALLAS, May 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Cowboys & Indians, The Premier Magazine of The West, celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of John Wayne in the July issue -- a Special Collector's Edition -- on sale June 12. Twelve of The Duke's greatest Western films, ranging from John Ford's "Stagecoach" (1939) to Don Siegel's "The Shootist" (1976), are spotlighted in a tribute that also includes exclusive C&I interviews with Maureen O'Hara, Wayne's close friend and frequent co-star; Harry Jackson, the artist who befriended Wayne after preparing a famous sculpture of the iconic superstar; and Katharine Ross, who played Wayne's headstrong daughter in the 1968 action drama "Hellfighters."

In another C&I interview, Ethan Wayne, The Duke's youngest son, recalls his greatest childhood adventure: Playing a supporting role opposite his dad in the gritty 1971 Western "Big Jake." Ethan also speaks eloquently and movingly about his father's valiant battle against cancer, and how the elder Wayne encouraged his son to help establish the John Wayne Cancer Foundation in Santa Monica, California.

Elsewhere in the July issue, C&I dishes on the trendy Cowgirl restaurant in New York's West Village, catches up with former "Davy Crockett" star (and current vineyard owner and hotel impresario) Fess Parker, flies high with hot-air balloonists in New Mexico, and profiles Jean "Joe" Hamman, the silent-era film star often billed as "The French John Wayne." Actor Max Martini of TV's "The Unit" reveals his family ties to rodeo life in a Live From Q&A interview, and cowboy poet Red Steagall (a longtime C&I contributor) talks about a very special upcoming benefit performance of "Soul of the West," the historical musical drama he co-authored with Andy Wilkinson and Anne Lockhart.
