Exponentia Announces Investment From Radio Owner Emmis
Exponentia's Breakthrough Technology Connects Global Audiences Via Mobile Devices
VANCOUVER, British Columbia, March 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Exponentia, a Vancouver-based global leader in mobile and online games and applications, today announced an investment by Indianapolis-based Emmis Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:EMMS), the ninth largest radio operator in the United States.
"Our close relationship with Emmis, a leader in new media interactivity in its own right, delivers a great deal of strategic leverage for the company as we go on to dominate live audience interactivity for the Sports and Entertainment markets," Exponentia Managing Partner Andrew Gregory said.
"Exponentia and Emmis are an excellent one-two punch given Emmis' enormous market reach through Radio across formats, and our platform of products for engaging their audiences," Jim Fawcett, Managing Partner at Exponentia said. "This is quite simply a match made in heaven for Exponentia's future."
"Emmis has said that when solutions are found to the challenges facing the media industry, they will start at Emmis," Emmis Chairman and CEO Jeff Smulyan said. "With our investment in Exponentia, we take another important step in providing consumers of traditional media with new and innovative ways to connect with and enjoy our content using exciting new technology such as text gaming on mobile phones."
Through its investment, Emmis will take a significant ownership stake in Exponentia, indicating its belief in the company's ability to execute on its growth plans. Smulyan said he anticipated this to be the first of a series of smaller investments in new technology.
Introduced at Christmas time 2004 as a first in mobile technology, Exponentia's PlayAction connects audiences of live events via their mobile phones -- whether at-home, in-venue or anywhere in the world -- to participate in prediction (Who will score the next goal?) and trivia (Which team originally drafted Vince Carter?) via their cell phones. Users compete for points and prizes over the course of one event or even a season of games. PlayAction can be used to energize audiences at sporting events, concerts and other real-time gatherings, enhancing the experience for the content provider, the broadcaster and the spectator. Revenue is derived from the text message itself, licensing fees and sponsorship dollars.
Exponentia recently signed a multi-year rights agreement with the National Hockey League to provide live interactivity via PlayAction both mobile and on- line to enhance the game experience for their fans.
