NXP Software Brings Mobile TV to Affordable Feature Phones With New Implementation on Texas Instruments OMAP-Vox(TM) Platform

NXP Software Brings Mobile TV to Affordable Feature Phones With New Implementation on Texas Instruments OMAP-Vox(TM) Platform

Demonstration at 3GSM 2007 in Barcelona, February 12-15

BARCELONA, February 9/PRNewswire/ -- Opening the way to mobile TV on affordable mass-market handsets, NXP
Software is demonstrating full TV functionality on Texas Instruments
Incorporated's (TI's) OMAP-Vox(TM) EDGE solution at 3GSM 2007. Through this
new reference implementation, TI and NXP Software are the first to enable an
application perceived as 'high-end' on a single-core platform designed for
mass-market phones.

The demo is based on NXP Software's TV Player which delivers high
quality, 15 frames per second (fps) QVGA mobile TV and supports channel
selection capabilities. Content is supplied by a live feed, with reception
handled by TI's Hollywood(TM) DVB-H receiver. Thanks to NXP Software's highly
optimized middleware, all the TV functionality, including H.264 and AAC+
encoding / decoding runs on TI's cost-effective OMAPV1030(TM) ARM9-based base
band processor. This marks a major breakthrough, as other mobile TV
implementations require a dedicated multimedia application processor next to
the base band chip.

NXP Software's TV Player used in this implementation is fully IPDC
(DVB-H) Electronic Service Guide (ESG) compatible, and can support other
standards such as OMA BCAST and MBMS. It also offers optional security
enhancements including support for 18C, Open Security Framework (OSF), and
the future OMA BCAST Smart Card profile.

This new implementation extends NXP Software's partnership with TI. As a
leading Independent Software Vendor (ISV) for mobile multimedia, NXP Software
already offers its LifeVibes(TM)Music, Video and Voice solutions for TI's
OMAP-Vox(TM) platform.

"With TI's affordable OMAP-Vox(TM) platform and NXP Software's highly
optimized TV middleware, TV on mobile becomes possible on high volume
handsets. It's an exciting opportunity for innovative devices and new
business models, which can bring mobile TV to a mass audience," says Cees
Geel, Managing Director, NXP Software.

"The mobile phone has changed the way consumers in emerging markets
communicate. With cost-effective mobile TV solutions like the combination of
NXP Software with TI's OMAPV1030 processor and Hollywood single chip, the
first TV experience for the vast majority of consumers in emerging markets
will likely be on their handset," said Remi El-Ouazzane, general manager of
TI's 2.5G Business.

This latest addition to NXP Software's LifeVibes(TM)TV products provides
a future-proof mobile TV solution, which allows easy application development
and short time to market. The next version will feature time-shifting and
interactivity, such as enabling users to cast votes during reality TV or game
shows.

LifeVibes(TM)TV is part of NXP Software's LifeVibes(TM)Music, TV, Video
and Voice solutions. These pre-integrated, fully interoperable solutions are
complete and extensively tested. They enable manufacturers to reach market
quickly with distinctive devices that deliver vibrant video, improved sound
and inviting images for enhanced multimedia experiences.
