Nancy Karibjanian Steps Down as WHYY Delaware Tonight Anchor; Begins New Chapter in Her Life

Karibjanian will continue to host 'Friday Forum' on WHYY Delaware Tonight

WILMINGTON, Del., Feb. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Nancy Karibjanian, anchor of WHYY's Delaware Tonight for the past 21 years, has decided to step down as host of the only broadcast television news program produced in and focusing on Delaware, effective March 16, 2007. She will, however, continue to be part of the WHYY Delaware news team, hosting Delaware Tonight's weekly "Friday Forum" segment, beginning on Friday, April 6.

"When I came to WHYY in November 1985 I never anticipated such a long and personally fulfilling career here. It has been my privilege to work in an environment where the mission to inform is always the priority," said Karibjanian. "I am pleased WHYY supports my decision and will make it possible for me to stay involved with WHYY Delaware Tonight while devoting more time to my family."

"Nancy has been the trusted face of WHYY news in Delaware for more than two decades," said Paul Gluck, WHYY Vice President and Station Manager. "Her dedication to reporting the news and understanding how issues and events affect the lives of everyone, has made her a reliable friend who is welcomed into the homes of all Delawareans five nights a week. We are fortunate that Nancy will continue to be associated with WHYY."

Karibjanian said: "Through the years I've been working the balancing act of family life and broadcasting. Now as my oldest child is getting ready for college I realize just how much of my children's lives I'm missing by not being home in the afternoons and early evenings. Therefore I've decided to leave my position as anchor for WHYY Delaware Tonight. I will remain involved with WHYY, but will shift my priority to family dinners at a reasonable hour and a seat in the stands at high school soccer and lacrosse games."

Karibjanian joined WHYY's on-air staff in 1985 as a reporter covering the state legislature. She was named anchor and news director in December 1986. With the arrival of her third child in 1994, Nancy assumed part time responsibilities to spend more time with her family.

A native of Vineland, New Jersey, Nancy graduated from the University of Delaware, where she teaches field television production. She lives in North Wilmington with her husband, Joe (also a University of Delaware graduate), and children, JJ, 18; Amanda, 15; and Maggie, 12.

WHYY Delaware Tonight is seen each weekday at 5:30 P.M. on TV12; WHYY 12.1 (Comcast Channel 240); on WHYY Wider Horizons (Comcast Channel 242) at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and is available anytime via Comcast's ON DEMAND and at www.whyy.org.

WHYY Delaware Tonight debuted in 1963 and is dedicated to reporting the news and issues of Delaware. It is produced from WHYY's Delaware Broadcast Center in Wilmington. News Director Micheline Boudreau is responsible for overall coverage of the news in Delaware. Dover Bureau chief Patirck Mairs reports daily on issues in Kent and Sussex counties.

WHYY is what a diverse community has in common. WHYY, through television, radio and other communications services, makes our region a better place, connecting each of us to the world's richest ideas and all of us to each other.
