BPI: Norah Jones Battles the Klaxons for the UK'S 800th Albums Number One
LONDON, February 2/PRNewswire/ -- Norah Jones' third album "Not Too Late" is running head to head with the
Klaxons debut "Myths Of The Near Future" to mark a chart milestone on Sunday
February 4 2007 - by becoming the 800th album to reach the Number
One position since the charts began on July 28 1956.
Should Norah Jones top the chart this week it would mark the end of a
historic week for British music that saw UK artists occupy the entire
top-10 places in the UK album chart for the first time in chart history.
UK talent celebrates first all-British Top 10 in UK chart history
UK talent has scored its most successful week in chart history by taking
all Top 10 places in the Official UK Albums chart for the first time
since the chart was established in 1956, according to British record
labels trade association the BPI.
This week's album chart is topped by two UK debut albums from The View
and The Good The Bad & The Queen.
The past two years have seen an unprecedented flourishing of UK talent
with domestic artists accounting for 62% of the best-selling albums in
the UK last year, the highest percentage in 10 years. On this evidence
2007 could be even better.
This week's unprecedented chart comes as UK acts are beginning to enjoy
increased success internationally, with triple BRIT-Award nominated
Corinne Bailey Rae's Oprah performance causing in her album to soar up
to fourth place in this week's Billboard 200 (US album chart).
BPI chairman Peter Jamieson said: "It is completely unprecedented to
have this many home grown acts featuring so highly in the charts. It is
a tremendous tribute to the quality of British talent and the companies
who spot and develop and invest in it.
"British music is currently going through a truly amazing creative
period."
