Tri-C's Movie Appreciation Series Puts Old Movies Back on the Big Screen

CLEVELAND, Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- This spring, Cuyahoga Community College's Office of Community Continuing Education will show an assortment of old movies on a big screen as part of its non-credit Movie Appreciation Series.

-- "B'Ware: Bad Film Directors from the 50's and Beyond," will run on Wednesdays from February 28 to April 18;

-- "Powerful Performances by Extraordinary Actors," Thursdays from March 29 to April 12;

-- "Cinema Dystopias: Visions of Failed Futures for Humanity," Tuesdays from March 27 to May 1;

-- "Horrid Musicals," Thursdays from April 19 to May 10;

-- "Science Fiction Remakes: Real Improvements or Just Special Effects Updates?" Tuesdays and Thursdays from February 27 to March 22.

Most courses will be taught from 6:30 to 9 p.m., with the exception of "Science Fiction Re-Makes" and "Cinema Dystopias," which will run until 9:30 p.m. The courses will be taught in the Unified Technologies Center Theatre at 2415 Woodland Ave. in Cleveland.

"Movies are not only a treasured part of our cultural heritage, but are also a window to the ideas and emotions of the period and media culture that they emerged from," says instructor Greg Klayber. "We can use these familiar and unfamiliar films to illuminate our perspectives of the cultural perceptions and fears of the 'American of decades ago.'" Klayber has been a film aficionado since his childhood and has acquired an extensive collection of movies, which he often uses to produce outdoor film festivals.

Course costs are as follows: "B'Ware" is $109, "Science Fiction Re-Makes" is $129, "Horrid Musicals" $79, "Powerful Performances" $65, and "Cinema Dystopias" is $105. The cost for the whole series, when registering for all five courses at once, is $450. To register for any of the courses in the Movie Appreciation Series, call (216) 987-3075.
