Verizon's FiOS TV Approved in 25th New York Community
Mount Kisco Grants Local Franchise; Choice and Competition Nearer for Residents
MOUNT KISCO, N.Y., Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- This Westchester County community is bringing its residents one step closer to choice for cable television services, thanks to a vote Monday night (Dec. 4) by the Village Board of Trustees to award a video franchise to Verizon for its FiOS TV service.
Mount Kisco is the 25th community in New York state -- and the 7th in Westchester County -- to grant a video franchise to Verizon. This franchise will add approximately 4,000 households to the growing list of communities that have approved Verizon's revolutionary FiOS TV service. As Verizon's fiber network is built, the company's 25 franchises across New York state will enable more than 580,000 households to enjoy stepped-up competition and more consumer choice for video services in the region.
"Reaching 25 communities in New York with FiOS TV is a significant milestone," said Monica Azare, Verizon senior vice president for New York and Connecticut. "This is great news for the residents of Mount Kisco, who now will have a new choice for their video entertainment.
"We look forward to bringing FiOS TV to more of our customers through similarly successful negotiations with other towns and villages in Westchester County, and elsewhere in the state," said Azare.
Mount Kisco joins a growing list of New York communities that are paving the way for competition and choice in the television market. Verizon has already been granted video franchises in Westchester County by the Town of Greenburgh and the villages of Irvington, Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Tarrytown and Eastchester. Verizon has also received video franchises from Nyack, South Nyack, Upper Nyack, Grandview-on-Hudson and Clarkstown in Rockland County, and on Long Island in the villages of Massapequa Park, Cedarhurst, Laurel Hollow, Lynbrook, Mineola, East Rockaway, Farmingdale, Valley Stream and Freeport, and the towns of Huntington, Smithtown, Hempstead and Oyster Bay.
As with all local franchise approvals in New York, the agreement between Mount Kisco and Verizon is subject to review by the New York State Public Service Commission.
Verizon currently offers FiOS TV in parts of eight states: California, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia. The company has video franchises covering approximately 4 million households in nine states and more than 200 franchise areas.
Verizon's FiOS TV service is designed to be a formidable competitor to cable and satellite, offering a broad collection of all-digital programming, more than 20 high-definition channels, video on demand and more. It is delivered over Verizon's fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network, which has industry-leading quality and reliability. Verizon is the first company to offer such a communications network, connecting homes and businesses directly to fiber optics on a widespread scale. Only Verizon's FTTP network has earned the certification of the independent Fiber to the Home Council for providing fiber all the way to customers' homes and businesses.
Verizon's fiber network delivers amazingly sharp pictures and sound, and has the capacity to transmit a wide array of high-definition programming that is so clear and intense it seems to leap from the TV screen. In addition to FiOS TV, Verizon's fiber network also allows the company to offer consumers and businesses high-speed FiOS Internet Service, which is currently available in many New York communities.
