WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 is 'On Your Side' With Operation Can-Do: 29th Annual Food Collection Program Serving Metro Detroit

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 will join with Big Boy Restaurants and MetroWorld Outreach to sponsor Operation Can-Do. Now in its 29th year, this annual community service campaign collects and distributes food to the hungry in metropolitan Detroit. Last year's Operation Can-Do campaign brought in 440,000 pounds of food to help feed families and individuals through soup kitchens and food banks in the tri-county area, feeding over 1.2 million people. Since its inauguration, the program has collected close to 9 million pounds of food, providing over 23 million meals to the hungry of Metropolitan Detroit.

Hundreds of area Boy Scouts will kick off the 2006 campaign with a door- to-door "Scouting for Food" collection on Saturday, November 11th. Donations of canned goods to Operation Can-Do can be made at any Big Boy Restaurant in the Detroit metropolitan area through December 31st.

"Operation Can-Do is committed to feeding hungry families in the metro Detroit area, not just for the holiday season but for months to come," said WXYZ Vice President and General Manager Grace Gilchrist. "The need is greater today because of layoffs, underemployment and more people than ever living on fixed incomes. Even with these tough economic times, I've no reservations that through Operation Can-Do metro Detroiters will find it in their hearts to give generously once again."

A portion of the food collected through Operation Can-Do is given to Metro World Outreach, a non-profit organization that distributes the food to nearly 400 metro Detroit area food banks.
