Wedgwood to Adorn Lincoln Center for Performing Arts Holiday Tree
NEW YORK, Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts today announced that Wedgwood, the venerable British china company, will provide exclusive ornamentation for the 17th annual Lincoln Center Holiday Tree. The tree lighting and festivities will take place on November 27, 2006 from 5:30-6:00 p.m. on Josie Robertson Plaza, right by Lincoln Center's famous plaza fountain at Columbus Avenue and 64th Street. The lighting ceremony kicks off the neighborhood's seasonal festival Winter's Eve at Lincoln Square.
This exciting celebration of music and dance is one of New York City's favorite holiday traditions, celebrating the rich cultural and artistic diversity found on America's premier performing arts campus. For the first time, the tree will be decorated with classic Wedgwood ornaments, created in the traditional blue and white jasperware style. Cameo and Blue Star Ornaments feature the relief technique for which Wedgwood has been famous since the 18th Century. The Blue Relief Ornament takes its theme from the timeless beauty of a decorative motif that has been enduringly popular for more than two millennia. The Acanthus leaf was one of the elements drawn from nature that artists of Wedgwood favored for decoration in the famous neo- classical style. An exclusive Wedgwood Spire ornament featuring the Florentine Turquoise pattern has also been created, and will debut exclusively for Lincoln Center. The ornaments highlight the musical, theatrical, and performing arts presented at Lincoln Center.
The holiday tree, a Colorado Blue Spruce standing 50 feet tall, will be lit at 5:59 p.m. with the help of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse and magic light wands provided for the live audience. The star-studded program will feature excerpts of the Metropolitan Opera's new holiday family production of Mozart's The Magic Flute, as well as a festive set from members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and a selection from George Balenchine's The Nutcracker by the New York City Ballet and students from the American School of Ballet.
