The New Oxford American Dictionary Announces the Word of the Year: 'Carbon Neutral'
What do Al Gore, Rupert Murdoch, and the Rolling Stones have in common? They are all advocates of being "carbon neutral," the New Oxford American Dictionary's Word of the Year for 2006. Being carbon neutral involves calculating your total climate-damaging carbon emissions (your "carbon footprint"), reducing them where possible, and then balancing your remaining emissions, often by purchasing a carbon offset: paying to plant new trees or investing in "green" technologies such as solar and wind power.

A recent Maritz Poll found that approximately one in three shoppers (34 percent) plan to shop in stores on the day after Thanksgiving, while 61 percent of respondents polled avoid Black Friday. Of those shunning one of the busiest shopping days of the year, 10 percent used words like "crazy," "madhouse," "hectic" and "insane" to describe the experience.

Need a little extra spending money for the holidays? Twenty-three percent of hiring managers say they are recruiting for holiday positions, according to a recent CareerBuilder.com survey. Nearly one-in-four expect to pay their seasonal hires more than last year, with 37 percent offering $10 or more per hour. The CareerBuilder.com survey, "Holiday Jobs," was completed in September and included 1,150 hiring managers nationwide.

The survey found a majority of women (67 percent) admitted spying on their partners, generally fueled by suspicions of infidelity, while 58 percent said they've investigated their children's behavior -- primarily from fear their kids were involved with drugs. Only 15 percent had the guts to spy on their boss. But in the "be careful what you wish for" category, nearly half of all snoopers (43 percent) discovered something they later regretted learning.
