Future of Music Coalition to Gather Musicians in New Orleans

Steve Earle, Mike Mills, Allison Moorer, Tom Morello, Boots Riley, Corin Tucker and Others to Participate

Benefit Concert at Tipitina's Set for Nov. 6th

WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Future of Music Coalition will assemble a diverse group of acclaimed activist musicians for meetings in New Orleans from November 3rd - 6th. Steve Earle, Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Allison Moorer, Tom Morello (Audioslave and Rage Against the Machine), Boots Riley (the Coup), and Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney) will attend the gathering and perform in a benefit concert at Tipitina's on Monday, November 6th. The meetings are made possible by a generous grant from the Nathan Cummings Foundation.

"Since Hurricane Katrina devastated the city just over a year ago, New Orleans has seen an inspiring number of grass roots activist musicians working to rebuild their communities," said Jenny Toomey, Executive Director of Future of Music Coalition. "This gathering is an opportunity to talk about music and activism in an environment that will support these musicians and draw attention to their ongoing struggle to rebuild."

During the course of the weekend, the visiting artists will meet and play a private show with legacy artists including Al "Carnival Time" Johnson, and local musicians such as Stanton Moore and James Andrews, at the legendary Ernie K-Doe Mother-In-Law Lounge. They will tour the flood damage and learn about the reconstruction efforts with the Arabi Wrecking Krewe, a non-profit volunteer organization of local musicians that helps musicians and their families salvage their homes and return to their city.

"New Orleans is still in a time of need right now," said Craig Klein of Bonerama and the Arabi Wrecking Krewe. "The musicians are very vital and an important cultural part of New Orleans. Without them we lose the New Orleans as we know and love. And with the help of these generous artists, FMC and many others who are concerned about us, we will be back in our homes doing what we want to do -- playing music."

The Monday night (November 6th) benefit show, titled: "Future of Music Coalition presents: Musicians Bringing Musicians Home, A Benefit for Arabi Wrecking Krewe, New Orleans Musicians' Clinic and Tipitina's Foundation" will include individual and collaborative performances by Steve Earle and some of the other visiting musicians, legacy artists, and local musicians, including trombone collective Bonerama and Al "Carnival Time" Johnson. Tickets are $25 and are available now at http://www.tipitinas.com/, http://www.ticketweb.com/, or at the Tipitina's box office.

"I haven't been to New Orleans since the February before Katrina and I feel it's high time I went back," comments Steve Earle. "This is also a chance to get to know some artists whose work, both artistic and political, I've admired from afar."
