TouchTunes Turns On Its 20,000th Digital Jukebox
LAKE ZURICH, Ill., Oct. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- TouchTunes Music Corporation has announced the installation of its 20,000th digital-downloading commercial jukebox, an industry first.
TouchTunes launched the world's first coin-operated digital-downloading jukebox in 1998 and commands more than 70 percent of the digital jukebox market, the company says.
An estimated 27,000 digital jukeboxes are currently operating in bars, restaurants, and other locations in North America, out of approximately 175,000 coin jukeboxes of all kinds -- digital, CD, and vinyl, according to Dan McAllister, TouchTunes' senior vice president for sales and marketing.
"From the start, we've consistently had far more units on location and online than all of our competitors combined," McAllister said. "With 20,000 jukeboxes and counting, we're extending the lead."
The milestone 20,000th jukebox, a jumbo-size, broadband-connected wall model with a 19-inch interactive LCD display, was installed recently at Aussie's Pub in Omaha, Neb. The jukebox is owned and operated by Nebraska Technical Services (NTS) and is that company's 300th TouchTunes jukebox.
Aussie's Pub became one of the first bars in the world with a digital jukebox when it received a first-generation TouchTunes unit in the fall of 1998.
Eric Perquin, manager of Aussie's Pub, said, "The sound quality of the TouchTunes jukebox is beyond reproach. Newcomers look around expecting to see a live band. And once somebody starts the music playing, it goes all night."
The bar's new jukebox features a pre-release version of TouchTunes' new broadband technology, providing ultra-fast song searching for patrons, unparalleled music management capabilities for jukebox operators, and, notably, the ability to download and play users' personal playlists via the Internet -- another industry first, McAllister noted.
"Just from a technology standpoint alone, it's breathtaking to see how far we've come in eight years," he said. "The new TouchTunes jukebox at Aussie's Pub is light years ahead of the first installation there."
TouchTunes' earliest jukebox had 750 songs on the hard drive and offered only dial-up connectivity for music updates and administration. Today, more than 90 percent of its jukeboxes are broadband-enabled, the local hard drive holds 2,000 songs, and hundreds of thousands of additional songs are available to download and play immediately from an on-board mini-server and via broadband from TouchTunes' central music library.
