Concert celebrating United Nations showcases Greek poems set to music by Greek composers and performed by internationally acclaimed orchestra and musicians
NEW YORK, Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- A special concert of works by renowned Greek composers featuring poems by Nobel prize-winning Greek poets, performed by the National Symphony Orchestra of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation- ERT and internationally acclaimed musicians, will be presented on Wednesday, October 25th, at 7pm at the United Nations General Assembly Hall. The Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation, under the auspices of the Foreign Ministry of Greece, will sponsor Greece: Poetry in Music, C.P. Cavafy, George Seferis Odysseas Elytis to celebrate the 61st Anniversary of the United Nations. Organized by a different member of the United Nations each year, this concert honors the United Nations Charter that was created in 1945, and is presented to an audience of UN member representatives. This is the first time that Greece, currently a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, will organize this annual concert.
The same concert, under the auspices of the Foreign Ministry of Greece and sponsored by the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation, will also be presented at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, in New York on Thursday October 26th at 8pm.
Greece: Poetry in Music will feature modern poetry by acclaimed Greek poets C.P. Cavafy, George Seferis, 1963 Nobel Prize Winner, and Odysseas Elytis, 1979 Nobel Prize Winner. The poets' literary works have been set to music by Greece's most prominent composers, including Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hatzidakis, Dimitris Laghios, Dimitris Papadimitriou and Spyros Samaras, composer of the Olympic Anthem. Presenting their works will be the National Symphony Orchestra of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation-ERT, led by conductors Andreas Pylarinos and Mo Steven White; Mexican lyric tenor Rolando Villazon; and Greek soloists Foteini Darra, Tasos Apostolou, and Andreas Smyrnakis.
The President of the 61st General Assembly Session, Mrs. Haya Rashed Al Khalifa, United Nations Secretary-General Mr. Kofi Annan, and a Minister of the Greek government, will make opening remarks before the concert. Under- Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, Mr. Shashi Tharoor, will introduce the performance. The concert will close a series of celebratory events organized by Greece in the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
