LCA's Distinguished Service Award recognizes those in the arts and legal communities who have shown exemplary commitment to nourishing the people and environment that provide art and culture in the Chicago and surrounding areas. This year, LCA has the pleasure of presenting awards to Robert Falls, renowned artistic director of Chicago's Goodman Theatre who is celebrating his twentieth anniversary with the Goodman; Roche Schulfer, Executive Director of the Goodman Theatre; Alene Valkanas, celebrating 20 years of service as Executive Director of the Illinois Arts Alliance, a statewide service, education and lobbying group for the arts in education; the law firm of Bell, Boyd and Lloyd; and The People's Music School. This year, the Thomas R. Leavens Award, acknowledging devoted service to LCA, is awarded to Scott Hodes, attorney at the law firm of Bryan Cave and recent past president of LCA.
About Lawyers for the Creative Arts (LCA):
Founded in 1972, for the past 34 years, LCA has enlisted the volunteer services of hundreds of attorneys to provide pro bono legal assistance to individuals and art organizations in all areas of the arts who are financially unable to retain legal counsel. In addition to assistance in organizing arts businesses, both for-profit and not-for-profit and advising on a many areas of the law, LCA offers a schedule of speaking events and instructional workshops, including programs on not-for-profit incorporation and tax exemption, music publishing seminars, contracts, copyright and trademark clinics and maintains an Arts Mediation Service to mediate arts disputes quickly, privately and inexpensively. LCA serves primarily the metropolitan Chicago area, but also all of Illinois and neighboring states. LCA's current President is William H. Frankel of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the U.S.
