Acting the Truth: New Book Dissects Techniques of Renowned Director for Actors, Directors, Teachers
NORWALK, Conn., Oct. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Author Albert Pia offers an in- depth analysis of renowned director Constantin Stanislavski's methods and techniques in his new book, "Acting the Truth - The Acting Principles of Constantin Stanislavski and Exercises: A Handbook for Actors, Directors, and Instructors of Theatre" (now available through AuthorHouse).
Separated into six parts, Pia's book makes these advanced techniques useful for actors at all stages of development. In Part I, character development is explored. Part II focuses on the physical aspects of acting including movement, speech, costumes and tempo and rhythm of line delivery. Parts III and IV include a compilation of the activities and exercises used by Stanislavski. Designed as a manual for instructors, Part V is a teaching syllabus easily adaptable to students of any age and level. Part VI is a look inside the art of script dissection for better understanding of the playwright's work. Each section is accompanied by exercises and activities for actors to improve their skills in these areas.
Pia says these techniques are timeless and remain relevant to stage performers of all types. "The valued and proven acting principles of Constantin Stanislavski may be employed in any classroom to teach acting technique, in any theater staging of comedy or drama, classic or contemporary works, including musical productions and operas," he says.
Pia's theater career began in school plays as an actor, director and stage technician through high school and college. He completed bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of New Hampshire after serving as a combat pilot in World War II and the Korean War. He studied at the H.B. Studio in New York City with Herbert Berghof, Uta Hagen and Bill Hickey and at Circle in the Square with Allan Schneider. Throughout his career, he has taught and directed theater in high schools and colleges. He and his actress wife, Betty, have also organized community theaters in America as well as Europe. His productions have been recognized by the Connecticut Drama Association and the New England Theater Conference, and he has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Connecticut Critics Circle. His teaching accomplishments have been honored by the Westport Historical Society and Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 1998 and 2004-2005. Upon his retirement, Staples High School recognized his 30 years as an educator with the Albert Pia Studio Theater. In addition to Acting the Truth, Pia has written several plays and another book titled "On Stage!" (also available through AuthorHouse).
