APS Implements New Digital Video Recorder

APS Implements New Digital Video Recorder

DIEPHOLZ and UNTERFOEGHRING, Germany, October 17/PRNewswire/ -- The artec technologies inc. from Diepholz has just developed a new video
recorder on assignment from APS ASTRA Platform Services GmbH in
Unterfoehring. The new unit records 39 parallel programs nonstop for more
than 90 days. The digital recording system will be used in Unterfoehring for
archiving and managing the TV programs which APS broadcasts via satellite,
programs which include those offered by "Premiere," including its HDTV
channels. The storage capacity is projected at approximately 30 terabytes,
which corresponds to the storage volume of about 100 standard computers on
the market today. The storage medium itself is a computer system which makes
previous broadcasts available in seconds by pressing a button: as if by
magic, the software developed by artec technologies projects each and any
broadcast onto the monitor via a video search engine.

"With our new archiving system, APS now has at its disposal one of the
most modern digital recording systems on earth," Thomas Hoffmann of artec's
board of directors says. "Digital systems of this kind will conquer entirely
new territories in television. The potential for such intelligent storage
systems in digital television is basically unlimited."

Stefan Hennecke, manager of the APS playout center is likewise
enthusiastic about the new instrument: "The government requires that all
broadcast TV contents be archived, i.e., as a rule, a program must be
available for at least 90 days after it has been broadcast. Thanks to this
digital solution from artec technologies, we will be able to prove if we have
transmitted television images without interference even months after they
were put on the air."

In the past, broadcasting stations stored their programs on thousands of
analog video cassettes. Nowadays, more and more TV and radio stations are
turning to digital solutions. The advantages: Maintaining such television
contents on hard drives saves space and costs. The increasing number of new
channels and sub-categories is another reason for going digital as well. More
and more broadcasting companies and broadcasting more and more programs at
the same time. Digital storage can be expanded without any problem and
adapted to the operation of numerous channels.

As one of the leading pioneers in digitalization, artec technologies
specializes in the development of digital TV archives. The XBL Broadcast
Logger System, developed exclusively in Diepholz, is not only used by
numerous companies for transmission auditing and editing, they also use it as
a service platform for IPTV applications and media monitoring as well. Artec
technologies' counts among its customers such international TV-broadcasters,
ISPs and concerns as France 5, Euronews, RTL, CNN, Deutsche Telekom, Tiscali
and Sony Broadcast.
