PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The United States House of Representatives was called on Friday to adopt a resolution honoring The PGA of America upon its 90th anniversary and recognize the Association's contributions to the game of golf and benefits provided to the country.
The resolution, H. Con. Res. 471, introduced by Rep. Mark Foley (R- Florida) and co-sponsored by 29 other House members, continues a year-long celebration nationwide of the world's largest working sports organization which was founded April 10, 1916, in New York City, and currently has more than 28,000 men and women PGA Professionals.
A news conference was hosted Friday at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., by Rep. Foley, who was joined by fellow lead co-sponsor Rep. James E. Clyburn (D - S.C.), the Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. The PGA of America was represented by President Roger Warren of Kiawah Island, S.C., Chief Executive Officer Joe Steranka and PGA Professional Bob Baldassari of Fredericksburg, Va., president of the Middle Atlantic PGA Section and the 2006 PGA President's Plaque award winner for exceptional contributions to player development.
The Resolution includes the following statement: "Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That the Congress -(1) Congratulates The Professional Golfers' Association of America on its 90th anniversary; (2) Commends The Professional Golfers' Association of America and its members for their contributions to the game of golf and their efforts to make golf accessible; and (3) Applauds The Professional Golfers' Association of America and its members for their contributions to employment and economic growth in the United States."
PGA President Roger Warren expressed gratitude that members of the House would take the time to support The PGA of America during a busy congressional session.
"The PGA of America is most appreciative of the efforts of Congressman Foley, who spearheaded this resolution of support, and to Congressmen [Joe] Baca of California, Clyburn and [E. Clay] Shaw of Florida for their demonstrated support of golf for so many years," said Warren. "The lawmakers of our country have given bipartisan endorsement to the values by which PGA Professionals commit themselves daily to build an industry that supports employment, is accessible for minorities, women and the disabled, and contributes generously to charitable organizations and benevolent relief."
"The PGA of America has made tremendous charitable and economic contributions over the past 90 years on its way to becoming the world's largest working sports organization," said Rep. Foley. "The golf industry has an enormous impact in my district and to the economy of Florida, much of which wouldn't be possible without The PGA. This resolution provides Congress with the opportunity to recognize the 90th Anniversary of The PGA of America and its members on their great success and good works in our community."
Rep. Clyburn added: "No matter the age, the background or the body type, almost anyone can play golf. It is all about you and the elements. I love this game, and I commend The PGA for its work maintaining the grand tradition and making the game accessible to all walks of life."
Celebrating its 90th anniversary, The PGA of America was founded in 1916, and is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the game of golf while continuing to enhance the standards of the profession. The Association is comprised of more than 28,000 men and women PGA Professionals who are dedicated to growing participation in the game of golf.
