Unwritten Law Gets Radio Support on Their Own
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The climate of radio has changed. It no longer takes the weight of a major label promotion department to get a song on the radio. Bands like Unwritten Law that have created a brand at modern rock radio, have found stations that had success with them in the past are still willing to support them.
Kevin Stapleford, Program Director of San Diego's 91X says, "I think a lot of us forget that in our business, there are three different agendas constantly fighting for dominance: those of the record label, the radio stations, and the bands themselves. Although working directly with management can be a nightmare if the artist doesn't see the value in nurturing a relationship with radio, it can also be a huge positive. For example, in the case of 91X and Unwritten Law, both sides understand the importance of the band in this particular market, and we both know how much airplay and promotion played in to it. Can Unwritten Law survive without 91X? Yes. Can 91X survive without Unwritten Law? Yes. But by forming a bond, we're able to super serve the audience that we share. That's huge for us, and if it's equally huge for them, all the better."
"Shoulda Known Better," the single from the forthcoming album "Hit List" will be released by Artist To Market (A2M) Distribution. Les Borsai, manager of Unwritten Law, started Modern Artist Management to create more successful profit margins for his artists. In doing so, he has assembled a team of music industry independents to act as a virtual record label. Modern Artists pressed and shipped the single directly to active and modern rock radio, and many PDs of those stations have been contacting Borsai directly. "In the past I would have to go through the record label's national alternative person, their regional, and the independent. Now I can go directly to the source," Borsai says. "It provides a greater service to the artist, because my agenda is only with them. I never knew what my record company's agenda was, or how I fit in to the pecking order of the many artists they were trying to add at the time. Now I can get an answer from the one person who holds the cards. I can find out immediately if my artist works for their market. No other politics get in the way."
Paul Ignasinski, General Manager of A2M, adds, "It's great to see independent artists that deliver great songs being embraced in the incredibly tough and competitive arena of radio. We've built a structure at A2M that allows established artists to release their music independently, and still be very competitive in the retail marketplace for the consumer. The addition of strong radio support will not only help to bolster our marketing and retail efforts, but more importantly it will also allow artists to continue building their fan bases and managing their careers on their terms."
About Unwritten Law
